I belong to God because I give myself as a living sacrifice to Him
Okay! So we know that God created us, and then we choose Jesus and the Holy Spirit lives in us. Then spiritual transformation really begins as we surrender our “self”. Granted, transformation begins when God tugs on our hearts to even consider accepting Jesus, but I’m talking about “death of self” transformation. It’s like we become a living sacrifice to God.
Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV2011
Being a living sacrifice to God means living a life of stewardship and ambassadorship – wholeheartedly serving Him with our lives. This is our worship to Him. And to be a good steward of all that we have been given, and to be a true ambassador for God we must become more like Him.
It’s not just something that we can do on our own, nor is it a checklist that we can just follow and be done with. When we choose Jesus, we are choosing new life and the changes that will take place within us. Our priorities will turn around. God brings things up in our lives in His perfect timing that we can then choose to let Him deal with, or fight against.
Theses things that we go through and have to die to can be anything from letting go of playing video games, to learning to forgive and love someone who hurt you more than you could have ever imagined.
Does it feel good to veg. out in front of a screen and play a brainless game? Yes, real world stress is irrelevant for a little while! Does it feel good to hate, and bash, and get revenge on someone who hurt you? In the heat of anger, yes. But then when your day is over and you look at yourself in the mirror and ask, “what did I do with my day? Am I proud of how I treated that person, whether I think they deserved it or not… Can I face myself?”
Galatians 6:8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. NIV2011
These are just a couple of examples, but there is an entire world… or life of self that we must turn away from. And doing this doesn’t happen all at once. It takes a lifetime of submitting our will to God’s will and letting Him purify and refine us through the Holy Spirit living in us. But we learn and grow through the journey. And we learn to love Him and others more and more along the way.
John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”NIV84
I not only want to be a Christian by acceptance of Jesus, but by following His example. By letting His love touch other people’s lives through me; how I live and love; what I choose to do, say, and think, and what I choose to not do, say and think… when I am seen by others and when I am not.
By living our lives as a living sacrifice, we are choosing each day to turn away from our flesh to kneel before the King of Kings. We are expressing with our choices and actions; with each choice and each action, that we belong to God. This is true and proper worship!
Who or what do you belong to? Choose what is better today!
Father, I know You love me. I know You already see me as all that You created me to be, but I know I can’t become that through my own might and strength. I need You, Lord to refine me each day to be holy and pleasing to You. And I need Your strength to help me to make relevant sacrifices. Please help me to recognize and let go of those things that hold such a strong priority in my life. Big or small, I don’t want anything to have a hold of my heart more than You, Father.
Lord, I want to sow to please the Spirit and reap eternal life, and not only for myself; but that the things that I choose to sow would also help lead others to eternal life. My life is not my own… Please remind me of that when I want to choose my own way instead of Your better way. Father, I know I have a lifetime of refining and perfecting to journey through, but I pray that each step of the way that I always live a life of worship; in surrender and sacrifice as one that truly belongs to only You. I love You with all that is within me. Amen.
